The Maasai Mara is the most popular of Kenya's wildlife parks. Situated 245 kilometers from Nairobi, along the border with Tanzania, it covers an area of 1672 square kilometers and forms the northern-most extension of the Mara-Serengeti eco-system defined by the annual migration of the wildebeest.

The reserve boasts the highest density of wildlife in sub-Saharan Africa. It is made up of rolling plains with scattered acacia trees, riverine forest and hills covered with dense croton bush which provides ideal cover for animals sheltering from the mid-day sun. The migration of wildebeest from the short-grass plains in the southern Serengeti reaches the Maasai Mara in July. One and a half million animals come to graze on a sea of grass before returning south in October.

The landscape is dramatic and unforgettable and home to more than 2.5 million herbivores. In addition to the visiting wildebeest, you will see many of the resident species including giraffe, gazelles, zebra, eland, elephant, dik-dik, buffalo, kongoni, topi, hippo, rhino and warthog. There are also large numbers of lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and jackal as well as smaller mammals, abundant bird-life and reptiles.

Our Community

Sekenani Camp is host to a far-reaching community development project which aims to improve the quality of life for Maasai people living around the reserve. It focuses on building infrastructure for health-care, education, veterinary services and clean water supplies. The project office is located in the reception area of the camp. Guests who are interested in Maasai culture may find it interesting to see what we are doing in the local community and may arrange to visit some of the project sites if they wish to do so.

The Maasai Mara

Conservation

Sekenani Camp is proud to be at the forefront of conservation efforts in the Maasai Mara. We are leaders in the field of waste management and have pioneered the introduction of fuel efficient stoves, combustible briquettes and the role of fast-growing tree lots to provide cooking fuel to an expanding population.
